Nondestructive Testing

ABI® Integrity Services produces the Stress-Strain Microprobe® (SSM™) system to provide reliable onsite nondestructive testing (NDT) of steel structures.

Nondestructive Testing (NDT)

Nondestructive testing is a test and analysis technique that is utilized by industries to evaluate the properties of a component, material, system or structure for any differences in characteristic or welding defects and discontinuities. This can be done without damaging the original part. Find out more about this technique and how it can benefit your company.

What is Nondestructive Testing?

Nondestructive testing can also be known nondestructive inspection or nondestructive examination and nondestructive evaluation. It provides a nondestructive alternative for the measurement of fracture toughness and tensile strength for steel. With this alternative test and analysis technique, industries can eliminate the need for any samples to be cut before testing and analysis can be done. This in turn reduces the time and costs associated with the traditional destructive inspection method and other time-consuming test and analysis techniques.

How is Nondestructive Testing Performed?

Nondestructive testing is based on progressive indentation with partial unloading that is performed halfway through the process. This persists until the indentation reaches the maximum strain and it will need to be fully unloaded to complete the process. Nondestructive testing is effective in measuring the properties on only a small volume of material. The rest of the testing method involves indenting a depression which is similar to the process of sand blasting or shot-peening. The mechanical properties of the process are as follows:

  • True-Plastic/True-Stress Strain Curve
  • Yield Strength•Strength Coefficient
  • Strain-Hardening Exponent
  • Ultimate Strength
  • Uniform Ductility
  • Reference Temperature
  • Fracture Toughness Values
  • Fracture Toughness and Reference Temperature Master Curve Analysis

Advantages of Nondestructive Testing

Nondestructive testing is an ideal option to test in-service components that do not permit the cutting of samples due to excessive costs or because of the process being too impractical such as a piping system. The spherical indentations made on a piping system are smooth and shallow with no sharp edges or stress concentration spots. This efficient technique is effective in preventing accidents and in turn lowers down the costs associated with replacement, repairs, loss of equipment and business operational downtime. Below is an in-depth coverage of the associated advantages of nondestructive testing:

  • Reduced Business Downtime – Nondestructive testing can be done on materials while they are in use, thus eliminating the need for a shutdown of business operations.
  • Reduced Waste –Nondestructive testing does not alter substances so they can still be used after being tested which in turn reduce the amount of wastes produced.
  • Prevents Accidents –Nondestructive testing can help to prevent accident which means industries can reduce costs of replacement, repairs, and loss of equipment.
  • Comprehensive Testing –Nondestructive testing does not alter substances which allows it to test on any component or product. No selective sampling is necessary and can be applied at multiple stages of construction or development. This allows industries to identify problem pieces that need repair or replacement before the project is complete or after it has been put to use.
